About
GLOBE was relaunched in Ireland in September 2017 by An Taisce - The National Trust of Ireland with support from the Irish Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
GLOBE Ireland supports primary and secondary schools in Ireland engaging with GLOBE protocols, GLOBE Ireland citizen-science activities, solutions-oriented thinking and sustainable actions to protect and improve local environments.
Currently GLOBE Ireland focuses on the themes of Air Quality, River Ecosystems, Rainfall & Flooding - building climate resilience, Urban Heat Island - Surface temperature and Landcover, and Phenology..

Challenge Area Activities
Personal Skill:
Participants can build their STEAM skills through a combination of online training, engagement in taking environmental measurements outside, and recording data in an international database. Their observations are very important as they feed into an international database that helps scientists and educators to better understand our changing environment.
The GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) programme is a NASA-supported international science and education programme that offers students the chance to participate in data collection, the scientific process, and contribute meaningfully to our understanding of the Earth system and global environment (www.globe.gov). GLOBE was relaunched in Ireland in September 2017 by An Taisce with support from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The main objective of GLOBE in Ireland is to provide opportunities for primary and secondary school students nationally to engage with Earth and environmental measurements through citizen science campaigns and project

Programme Breakdown
GLOBE Ireland is coordinated out of An Taisce. Participants in the programme can become trained in how to make observations outside in their local environment. The observations can relate to different environmental spheres (Air, Land, Water).
Participants will learn how to record and submit their observations to the GLOBE database (via the GLOBE Observer APP or through the GLOBE website). These data are uploaded to GLOBE’s open-source database and made freely available to everyone. GLOBE’s database offers more than a quarter billion data points collected worldwide over three decades. These surface-based observations have been used to better understand fundamental Earth system processes and applications by students and scientists at local, regional, and global scale!
GLOBE is a community of volunteers of all age ranges that connect and share knowledge through collaborative activities, events, measurement campaigns, and research. GLOBE participants can investigate and study Earth system science through their own research projects and those led by scientists and researchers worldwide. This research can focus on specific GLOBE measurement protocols to examine community-based or global questions. GLOBE encourages participants to present their research at regional research symposia or the Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS), where they discuss their research and receive feedback from each other, scientists, and educators.
With the support of NASA and the federal agencies that sponsor GLOBE, namely the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the U.S. Department of State (DoS), GLOBE engages everyone in purposeful data collection, building STEM skills and tomorrow’s STEM workforce.
Participants can choose what measurements to take, some observations will take just 10-15 minutes (single observation) and others can take longer (30 minutes). Participants are welcome to take as many observations/measurements as they wish.
