Applications for this year’s Defence Forces Adventure Challenge are now open! The adventure challenge is due to take place in June and will see Gaisce participants undertake a specially designed four-day programme under the close supervision of members of the 2 Brigade Artillery Regiment of the Defence Forces.
The Adventure Challenge is open to people under the age of 18 who are currently participating in their Gaisce Award and allows them, upon successful completion, to use the challenge towards the Adventure section of their Bronze Award. Those selected to complete their Defence Force Adventure Challenge will go out with the 2nd Brigade Artillery Regiment over 4 days and 3 nights, taking in various tasks such as outdoor pursuits, aerial runways, zip wires, river crossings, obstacle courses, hiking and survival skills.
The Defence Forces Adventure Challenge is a positive programme for young people. The selected participants are physically, mentally and emotionally tested through various activities. Those lucky enough to be selected will leave this challenge having learned more about themselves, their communication skills, teamwork abilities and levels of resilience and confidence. The Defence Forces Adventure Challenge shows how young people can dream big and realise their full potential!
Please bear in mind that this event will cover the Adventure Journey challenge area for the Gaisce Bronze Award only. If you are working towards a Gaisce Silver or Gold Award, you are still welcome to apply but you will need to take part in another Adventure Journey to fulfil the Award requirements.
The four days away with the Irish Defence Forces Gaisce challenge was one of the best experiences of my life. It was both mentally and physically challenging but was a once in a lifetime opportunity that I’ll never forget. It was brilliant. – Killian McCarthy, 2016 Defence Forces’ Adventure Challenge participant
The Defence Forces Adventure Challenge is a demanding four-day outdoor event and participants must meet the physical requirements set by the Defence Forces in order to take part. If you suffer from asthma, a heart condition, epilepsy or have additional support or accessibility requirements, please make us aware of such when applying.
Places on the adventure challenge are limited so participants will be selected through a lottery system. If you are selected, you will be required to complete and return a Parent/Guardian Consent Form and a Health Certificate from your doctor.
Applications are open up to and including the 31st of March, 2017.
